My work derives from my previous experience of anatomical observation and pattern recognition, together with a manual dexterity developed in my previous world as a dermatological surgeon.
I come to sculpture with a long standing enthusiasm for 3-D representational art which creates an immediate and empathetic connection with the viewer. I am intrigued by the human form and its ability to communicate a range of feelings and emotions. In particular I
am fascinated by the intricacies expressed by the complex anatomy of the face, hands and feet. I find the human form in motion especially stimulating and have found the art form of dance to be a source of constant inspiration.
Portraiture is now an important part of my work and I have undertaken a number of commissions including a portrait of a surgeon’s hands for the foyer of the new Royal Papworth Hospital.
I enjoy the creative process of using my hands to develop a solid shape in clay, plaster or wax which then intrigues the viewer to study it from all aspects. I am fascinated by the challenge of creating a permanent piece using a range of materials with a variety of finishes.
